The Big Mast Party

Congratulations!
I know I've mentioned and even shown some pictures of Dad's boat but last Sunday was the big day, the mast "stepping" is the proper way to say it. For us land folk it means they stood the masts up. These pictures were taken by Charity and hopefully all those that missed the party and wanted to see pics will be able to see these. Dad's been working on this boat since he retired about 3 years now. I've gotten to help a little bit and well, actually, many people have been able to contribute their tools and talents. It's really neat to see how Dad's dream is affecting others and how they have been able to come forward and help out. At least 50 people showed up for the big day. Next year Dad plans to set sail and start heading around the world. I hope to sail with him at least for a portion. Who knows what a year will bring.

the main mast is about 45ft above the deck

the sailing kite
infamous for sailing from the roof of our barn
the main mast is at least 20 ft above the barn

Just try to imagine: This boat is sitting out in our circle driveway, down a country road of very rural Minnesota. It has a 2hr journey by road to get to Lake Superior. From the deck as it is in these pictures, you can stand and look out at the corn field.
Schooner Stats:
ballast is 4,000 lbs of concrete
length on deck is 43 ft
overall length, tip to tip is 56 ft
it sits 6 ft in the water
name ideas: Sea Sparrow,
Valerie's Vessel

It's hard to believe that the whole thing is now back in the barn for the winter.
