50s Party

Well, I am about to head out to Alaska. My flight leaves in just a few hours. I thought I better say hello and do a little catch up on the stories of MN.

Saturday night was a 50's Party at Bethany's. It was all out, great food, lots of people, decorations, we dusted of some old magazines in the basement for effect. They were from the 60s but who's counting?

Mom and Dad came. Dad even dressed up. He had the hair gelled back, a Lucky hanging out of his mouth and a pack rolled up in his sleeve. There was a swirl of poodle skirts and plenty of pearls.

It didn't start off perfect. There was an absolute down pour that trapped Bethany and I in the garage. It was like being behind a waterfall to watch the water pour off the roof. We have been having amazing thunderstorms.

Luckily it cleared up just before guests arrived. The party was moved into the garage instead of the patio. We still had paper lanterns, Hannah saved the day by getting dry firewood for a bonfire. There was lots of Shirley Temples, sparklers, and lots of tongues practicing tying cherry stems.

Entertainment was watching Duane try to split a massive log with a pair of garden shears and a shovel. Man, if that had worked it would have been a great story. We now have a blade of a garden shears impossibly wedged in a 2 ft log and another scorched log beside that. Once we gave up on the idea of getting a log split Duane put one of the massive ones on the little heap of coals that made our fire pit. Mary had the idea to go around and tell our most embarassing moments. That eventually evolved into our most memorable spankings. By the time the party was dying down you would have thought everyone had been abused as a child. It still made for hilarious stories.

On Sunday I was up early and off to Mom and Dad's to watch a film crew document Dad's continuing boat project. Poor Dad - and Ben, they wanted this boat in the water by August. They are so anxious to get out there on the water. This film crew is one of Ben's friends. He really thinks there is a good story. I know he does. I am so excited for Dad.

Well, it's late, the next time I talk I'll have stories of Alaska to tell. I'm so happy to be going back.
